CTO Jaime Mineart says the company is reusing lessons from two decades of automating mines to get agents onto jobsites and quarries.
Why now: Mineart laid out the plan to TechCrunch on August 30.
Caterpillar is putting $100 million over five years into retraining 118,000 employees on AI and autonomy, CTO Jaime Mineart told TechCrunch.
Mineart says integrating the technology into a customer's jobsite and workflow is harder than building the model itself. Two decades of automating mining equipment taught Caterpillar that lesson. The company is now applying it to quarries and construction sites, which are messier and less controlled than a mine. It already runs 1.6 million connected assets and holds more than 16 petabytes of structured data from that automation work.
Inside the company, agents already modernize legacy code, generate and test software, and catch defects earlier in the process. The retraining budget sits on top of that work, and its size, $100 million for 118,000 people, signals Caterpillar's next constraint is workforce fluency.
Mineart's comments don't say how the retraining budget splits between software teams and equipment operators. Nor do they define what "trained on AI and autonomy" means for someone running a dozer. That gap matters because a training line item is easy to announce and hard to verify. Watch for whether Caterpillar publishes outcomes like fewer defects, faster deployment cycles, or operator adoption rates. A number announced without evidence behind it is just a press line.
