CPython added official tier 3 support for RISC-V, the entry-level status in its platform tiers, per the core team's announcement. Stan Ulbrych led the work, joined by Ludovic Henry of the RISE Project, Furkan Onder, and Emma Smith.
The Sovereign Tech Agency funded the effort, and the RISE Project supplied the hardware and testing infrastructure behind it. Entry-level platform support like this usually waits on a volunteer maintainer finding free time for a whole new architecture.
The announcement doesn't say what changes for release testing now that RISC-V has official standing. Next steps are CI integration, a push toward tier 2, and architecture-specific performance work.
I'd like to see this funding model spread. A sovereign tech fund underwriting a chip architecture's support in a major language runtime is the kind of work open source usually can't pay for. Volunteer maintainers rarely have spare time to bring up a whole new instruction set from scratch, so this took someone writing a check.
