Canadians still see Lake Ontario, since Google says it's following GNIS, the US government's name registry, not making the call itself.
Why now: Google began showing the split name immediately after posting the change on August 29.
Google Maps now shows "Lake America" to users in the US, while Canadians still see "Lake Ontario," per Google's August 29 post. Everyone else, everywhere outside the two countries, sees both names.
Google says it isn't making an editorial call. It's following official government name sources, GNIS in the US, which now carries the changed designation within US territory. The company shows whatever the local government registry says, per country. Rollout started right after the post went up.
That's a bigger shift than a label change. Geographic names used to be static facts, values you could store in one column and reuse everywhere. Now the correct name depends on where the viewer is standing, and the underlying government database can change it without warning. Google's own product proves the point: the same lake gets a different label depending on which side of the border loads the page.
