Cryptographer Klaus Schmeh had listed the 1653 poem among 50 unsolved ciphers, and Fable found the answer in the page layout, not a hidden code.
Why now: Vals AI's writeup is the only public account so far of how Fable solved the distich.
Fable 5.1 solved a cipher that outlasted cryptographers for 373 years, according to Vals AI.
Sir Thomas Urquhart published the two-line Cyphral Distich in 1653. Cryptographer Klaus Schmeh ranks it 28th on his list of 50 unsolved encrypted messages, a list built on centuries of failed frequency analysis and substitution attempts.
Fable took 176,000 tokens and 44 minutes, without any human interjections. The two lines, 32 numbers apiece, sit right after Urquhart's 32 Proquiritations. Each number points to a word position inside the matching proquiration, and the first letters of those words spell the plaintext.
The win was structural, not cryptographic. Centuries of codebreakers treated the distich as its own puzzle and never checked what sat on the page next to it, a numbered set of orations printed right above the code.
A model rereads the whole document instead of just the marked passage. A career cryptographer, ten reads in, stops seeing the page around the puzzle. The distich didn't need better math. It needed someone, or something, to look one page up.

Anthropic shipped Fable 5 on June 9. Willison spent ~5.5 hours stress-testing it: slow and expensive, but it handled everything he threw at it, including agentic coding. (Simon Willison) The tell that it's a real working model and not a benchmark queen: because it post-dated A...
Anthropic published "Redeploying Fable 5" on July 18, and the headline reads like good news until you get to the metering. Fable 5 becomes a permanent subscription feature for Max and Team Premium. Good. But it's metered at 50% of standard weekly limits, meaning every Fable to...
Fable 5 and Mythos 5 went dark this week. Not a soft sunset with a six-month migration window. A US export directive, and within hours the models were unavailable to any foreign national anywhere on earth. Enterprise teams outside the US woke up to API calls failing against a...
Simon Willison pulled the numbers out of an FT report sourced to "people with knowledge of the matter": Anthropic's annualized revenue reached $65bn in July, up from $47bn in May. Six thousand customers spend $100,000 or more a year. The company told investors it expects a pro...
OpenAI cut GPT-5.6 Luna roughly 80%, from $1 to $0.20 per million input and $6 to $1.20 output. Anthropic priced Opus 5 at $5/$25 per million, half of Fable 5. The trigger is DeepSeek, Zhipu's GLM-5.2 and Moonshot's Kimi K3 landing 60-90% below US flagship pricing, with DoorDa...
Willison published his AI Engineer World's Fair conversation with Anthropic's Cat Wu and Thariq Shihipar, covering Claude Code, Claude Tag, and Fable. Primary-source practitioner conversation with the people who actually build the thing, rather than secondary coverage of a pre...
