Three vendors independently made an editable text file the way you save a repeatable AI task, sidelining the old drag-and-drop automation builder.
Why now: Notion's release, the Codex teardown, and Figma's Config feature were all documented as of September 2.
Notion released Notion Skills on August 31, turning a saved AI workflow into a page a user can edit, per Notion's release notes.
The old model locked a saved automation inside a drag-and-drop builder no one could open outside that tool. Across all three launches, a text artifact now does the job a workflow builder used to do. Notion's version is a page a user owns, edits, and can hand to someone else the way they'd hand off any document.
A teardown of the Codex desktop app found the same shape, a skills plugin folder holding instructions for driving Codex's bundled binaries.
Figma's Config 2026 release lets users write a prompt to create a repeatable canvas skill. Three vendors reached the same design without a shared standard or, as far as the record shows, any coordination.
None of the three sources say whether a skill saved in one of these tools works in either of the other two.
