Willison found a 1.7GB cache also packing Node, Python, Poppler and git, with a skills folder telling the model how to run each one.
Why now: Willison published the cache breakdown on September 1.
Codex's desktop app packs a 1.7GB local toolchain, including 429.7MB of headless LibreOffice, inside its cache, according to Simon Willison's breakdown.
An agent that can run LibreOffice and Poppler locally doesn't need a document conversion API or a PDF extraction service for those jobs. The post reached 436 points on Hacker News, a sign builders read the cache listing the same way Willison did.
The full cache runs to 446.4MB of Node.js, 440.6MB of Python, 429.7MB of LibreOffice, 187.9MB of Poppler, and 148.1MB of git. A skills plugin folder sits next to the binaries, telling the model where each tool lives and how to run it.
Willison's post doesn't say why Codex chose local bundling over an API, or whether other desktop agents ship the same toolchain undisclosed. That gap matters for anyone pricing document conversion by the API call. If local bundling becomes standard, an agent that already runs the tool has no reason to pay per request.
