His September 3 essay says SAP and Workday sold organizational change, not code, and that breaks below 50 employees.
Why now: Evans published the essay September 3, taking direct aim at the AI-replaces-SaaS pitch already circulating.
Cheap AI tooling won't collapse enterprise software, Benedict Evans argues in a September 3 essay. The stakes are for anyone betting that AI coding tools let founders route around SaaS contracts. Evans says any tool that touches 50 people, or 500 spread across five departments, still goes through purchasing, no matter who wrote the code.
His argument is that the value SAP, Workday, Carta and Rippling sold was never the code. It was moving a workflow out of improvised spreadsheets and email into one system the whole company could rely on. He calls that organizational change. Coding was never the hard step.
A smaller point cuts just as hard. Most people don't see their job as an engineering problem to solve in the first place.
I think he's right at that size, and wrong below it. In a company of 5 to 50 people, the spreadsheet was never a workaround for the real system. It was the system already. There's no procurement chain to route around because there's no procurement department. A small team can build the internal tool a SaaS contract used to cover, and no committee has to sign off.

The agent business model showed up this week, and it's rent. At Knowledge 2026, ServiceNow launched Action Fabric, a layer that every external AI agent must pass through to read data or run workflows inside the ServiceNow platform, metered on action-based pricing (ServiceNow N...
SaaStr published an expanded AI Agent API Report Card grading 144 B2B APIs across six dimensions: API design, events/streaming, auth/security, rate limits, SDKs/docs, and agent readiness. The average score was 71 out of 100. A C+. The leaderboard tells a story. Stripe scored 9...

This is the most complete production-agent build sheet I've seen anyone publish, and almost every number in it argues against how the rest of us are building agents. Replit disclosed the internals of two production agents at SaaStr AI 2026: 10K, an autonomous VP of Marketing,...
$688 billion in hyperscaler AI capex against $110 billion of revenue. No capex breakeven until 2031 or 2032. Those are Scale Venture Partners' Rory O'Driscoll's numbers from SaaStr AI 2026, and they're the backdrop for the most useful strategy conversation I've read this month...
These aren't pilots anymore. Sierra reports $150M+ ARR within eight quarters of launch (on $950M raised), Intercom's Fin crossed $100M+ ARR resolving ~2M issues a week, and EliseAI sits around $100M ARR on $250M raised. Three companies selling completed work instead of seats,...
