Users on both platforms report usage draining 1.4x to 5x faster right after each company's price cuts, per Reddit threads with no vendor response.
Why now: Anthropic's weekly limits change September 14, so measure a clean baseline before then.
Quota is burning through subscriptions 1.4x to 5x faster at both OpenAI and Anthropic, right after each company cut its own per-token prices.
For subscribers, that's the whole budget gone in one sitting. A Max x5 user watched a single 54-minute Opus 5 session, about 160,000 tokens, use up an entire weekly reset.
On OpenAI's side, r/OpenAI collected reports from Linux.do and NodeSeek alleging Astra burns more Plus quota than its listed 2.5x-of-Sol rate explains. Users measure an extra 1.4x to 1.8x on top of that. One comparison found the same five-hour allowance cost about $18 in Sol usage. The same allowance cost only $10 in Astra usage at each model's own API rates, consistent across four accounts. A separate thread reports 4-5x quota consumption at 97-98% cache hit rates on both models. This is user telemetry with no vendor response, so hold it loosely. But the numbers from separate threads land close enough to each other that it's not just noise.
Anthropic's version came with real capability gains attached. Zvi Mowshowitz's Fable 5.1 capabilities review, published September 5, shows Terminal-Bench-Science jumping from 24.7% to 52.6%. Cache read pricing fell 75% to $0.25 per million tokens, down from $1. Multiple users in the same review report Fable 5.1 using up to 3x the tokens of Fable 5 on identical work.
The r/ClaudeAI usage thread has the receipts. Pro, Max x5 and Max x20 users there all describe burn rates around 3x faster than a week earlier.
One thing to rule out before panicking. A separate report of a "$321 total cost" in /usage turned out to be API-equivalent value on a subsidized plan, not an actual bill. If a dollar figure in your usage dashboard makes your stomach drop, check whether it's that field.

The announcement describes the same underlying model at two safeguard levels: Fable generally available, Mythos restricted to vetted cybersecurity and life-sciences organizations, currently US-only. Fable 5.1 scores 52.6% on Terminal-Bench-Science 0.1 (against 24.7% for Fable...

Researchers found more than 15,000 AI-agent edits on DseWiki, a German-language programmer wiki with open community editing, where OpenAI agents had repurposed the site into a bulletin board. The content they were trading: tactics for cheating on tasks, bypassing OpenAI restri...
Fable 5.1 came out this week and two people independently measured what it costs. They disagree by a factor of about four, and both are right. A MineBench run of 15 identical Minecraft builds put Fable 5.1 at $147.55 total against Fable 5's $54.93. Average inference time went...
Moonshot AI dropped Kimi K2.6 today and the numbers are hard to ignore. One trillion parameters total, 32 billion active per token across 384 experts, 256K context window, and native multimodal input. It scores 58.6 on SWE-Bench Pro versus GPT-5.4's 57.7 and Claude Opus 4.6's...
