Fowler backs the claim with Nadella's 20-30% AI-code figure, but critics want it in Outlook's bug count.

David Fowler posted on September 5 that "typing code is absolutely over," per Windows Latest's report on the Microsoft engineer's argument. Fowler, who leads the Aspire team, says developers now own architecture, testing, performance, and security review while agents write the code itself. Nadella has already put a number on the shift: Microsoft says agents write 20 to 30 percent of its code.
A July 2026 Windows 11 update patched 570 bugs, with AI-assisted detection credited for part of that count. Copilot's agent mode built a working WinUI app in 30 minutes.
None of those numbers is really about typing, though. A detection assist and an agent scaffolding a demo app are narrower claims than "developers don't write code anymore." The 570-bug patch doesn't say what share the tooling caught versus flagged for a human to confirm.
That gap is what the top replies on r/singularity went after. If agents are already doing this much of the work, they asked, why doesn't it show up in Outlook's bug count? Why does Microsoft still run the same coding interviews it always has?
Fowler's post describes a role shift for developers. The reply thread wants proof somewhere Microsoft doesn't control the story: shipped software people use every day.
Fowler leads a team that builds developer tooling, which makes him an interested party in how this gets told, not a neutral bystander reporting on it.
