The two largest US school districts chose a year-long pause over rules they hadn't finished writing.
Why now: The restrictions took effect as classes started, so neither district got to test an alternative policy first.
NYC and LAUSD restricted student-facing AI in classrooms on September 2 and 3, days before their school years began, Tech Policy Press reported. They're the country's two largest school districts, and neither had finished writing the longer-term rules it's pausing to make time for. A moratorium is a decision to decide later.
LAUSD's rule is a full one-year moratorium on generative AI on every district device. It covers all of the district's about 378,000 students.
New York's rule is narrower. It bars AI in every K-8 classroom, then lets high schoolers use a short list of district-approved tools. LAUSD's rule has no such carve-out.
Tech Policy Press's report doesn't say what happens if either district misses its own deadline. It also doesn't say whether NYC's approved list for high schoolers can grow during the year.
