Tech CEOs pitch AI at G20, protesters line the street

Sam Altman called AI "incredible magic of intelligence in a bottle" at a September 5 gathering in Chapel Hill, Fortune reported. Hundreds of protesters gathered outside over data center pollution, water use, and jobs.

An Economist/YouGov poll found two-thirds of Americans oppose a data center in their own community. Activists staged 142 demonstrations across 42 states in July alone.

Data centers don't get approved in Washington. They get approved at zoning boards, county commissions, and water utility hearings, one parcel at a time. A federal fight needs a vote in Congress to win. A buildout that needs hundreds of local approvals has to win all of them, and losing even a handful can stall a project for years.

CEOs on stage are still selling scale. The people who show up to a zoning meeting decide whether that scale gets built next to their water table. Site-selection teams now have to weigh permitting timelines and local political tolerance alongside power price, since the July protest count suggests opposition clusters in the communities slated for the most new capacity.
