The round pitches open weights and a full stack as insurance against vendor lock-in for buyers like Airbus and HSBC.
Why now: Mistral announced the round on September 8, the same week Broadcom pulled VDDK downloads from VMware customers.
Mistral raised €3B at a €21B valuation on September 8, per Mistral's announcement. The round is nearly double last year's €11.7B, and it's the largest equity round any European tech company has raised.
The stakes sit with Mistral's 125+ enterprise customers across 20 countries, including Airbus, ASML and HSBC, who want a vendor they can leave without rebuilding their stack if pricing or the roadmap changes.
The argument is contractual, not technical. Mistral says open weights and a full stack keep customers from being "locked into a single vendor's roadmap, pricing or availability."
Samsung, Scaleup Europe Fund and PSG Equity co-lead the round. Advent, BlackRock and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg are new to the cap table.
Broadcom pulled its VDDK downloads for VMware customers around the same period, tightening a lock that already has no exit route. Enclosure still works when there's nowhere else to go. It isn't the story anyone raises €3B on anymore.
