Seven AI startups turned unicorn in August

Seven of the 29 new unicorns Crunchbase counted for August were AI software companies, and the valuations don't match the money raised to get there. Those seven are worth $18.95B combined on roughly $2.16B raised, per Crunchbase's tally. The month's full unicorn class added about $63B.

River AI is the extreme case. It raised a $1.1B Series A and came out priced at $5B, before turning a year old. Instinct reached $2.5B at the same one-year mark. Pragmatik Labs turned a $220M seed into a $2B valuation. Wispr Flow, CodeRabbit, and HappyRobot round out the seven. Two of them crossed the billion-dollar line before their first birthday.

That's a different capital pattern than the multi-round climb that used to produce a unicorn. Here, one round sized in the hundreds of millions to just over a billion does the job a growth round used to do. The check is pricing the category, not confirming traction a later round would normally test.

Crunchbase's count doesn't say what revenue any of these seven have, or whether the valuations reflect standard equity terms. That gap matters more than usual when a single seed round produces a $2B mark. The number that would settle it, revenue against valuation, isn't in the tally. What's worth watching is whether River AI's math holds through a down round, since a $5B mark built on one check has no prior round to compare it against.
