The move breaks the lock-in Robux spending depends on, and Roblox hasn't said what happens to monetization once a game walks out the door.
Why now: Roblox announced the change at its Developer Conference on September 11.
Roblox is letting the games people build with a text prompt walk out the front door. Creators will be able to release Roblox-powered games as standalone apps on mobile, PC and consoles, with browser play via a shareable link planned by the end of 2026, per TechCrunch's report on the announcement.
That reverses how Roblox has made money since it started. The platform's economics run on keeping players inside Roblox, where they spend Robux on virtual goods and experiences. A game that ships as its own app on iOS or PlayStation sits outside that loop.
The rest of the September 11 announcement was about widening who can build. Roblox expanded Build, its natural-language game-creation tool, from a New Zealand-only test to Serbia and Singapore. It also added desktop access, an asset library and more iterative control over what gets generated.
The report doesn't say how monetization works once a game leaves. Does Robux travel with it? Does Roblox take a cut of purchases made in a standalone build? Neither question gets answered, and the answer decides whether this is a growth move or a self-inflicted wound.
My bet is Roblox keeps a monetization hook in every exported game, probably an SDK requirement or a revenue share baked into the export process. A platform doesn't build its business on keeping players spending inside its walls and then let games leave with no strings attached.
The rollout is still narrow. Two new countries, desktop support and a 2026 deadline for browser play mean most of this isn't live yet.
