The open model beats Suno v5 on a 192-prompt benchmark by generating an editable melody and chord sheet before synthesizing a single note.
Why now: The SongBench comparison putting YuE2 ahead of Suno v5 is current as of September 12, 2026.
YuE2 skips the usual text-to-audio shortcut. It writes an editable melody and chord score first. Then it synthesizes vocals and accompaniment from that score. A user can revise the composition before hearing a single note.
That sequencing matters because it turns music generation into an editing tool instead of a slot machine. If a chord change is wrong, you fix the sheet music, not the whole waveform. End-to-end models don't give you that seam. You either like the output or you re-roll the prompt and hope.
YuE2-3B runs about 3.59 billion parameters across 28 layers, paired with two MERT2 encoders at 632 million parameters each and a six-layer SheetSage2 decoder that handles the score-to-audio step. The weights are posted on Hugging Face.
On WildSongBench's 192 prompts across 17 system configurations, YuE2 scored 6.9632 in a best-of-8 comparison, edging out Suno v5's 6.8721, per the YuE2 project page. That's a narrow margin on one benchmark, and the page doesn't say how the scoring panel judged quality or whether the gap holds up outside WildSongBench's specific prompt set.
What it does show is that a smaller, open model can match a closed commercial one by changing the interface instead of scaling up. For builders, the score-then-audio split is the more durable idea here, even if the SongBench number ages badly. A tool a musician can open, edit, and re-render beats one that only lets you regenerate from scratch.
