Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark says a verifiable AI kill switch may need to be legally mandatory.

Clark told the BBC that a complete shutdown capability is the kind of thing society "might want to eventually pass rules around," and that the mechanism should be checkable by a third party rather than self-attested. He noted most labs including Anthropic already have some way to pull the plug. The shift from voluntary commitment to external audit is the substance here, and it makes the off-switch a deployment question rather than a training one.
