UN puts its statistics behind an MCP server

Google and the UN launched the UN System Data Commons on September 17, an open-source knowledge graph at data.un.org that pools statistics across UN entities and exposes them over MCP.

Agents can query the graph directly for population or trade figures instead of scraping a UN PDF and hoping the tables parsed right.

Twenty-six UN entities have committed to the project, and nearly 20 had contributed data by launch. The target is 80% of UN statistical datasets by the end of 2027. Google.org put in $2 million to fund independent, long-term operation of the system.

I've spent enough time building RAG pipelines to see the problem this fixes. Citing UN population figures still means parsing PDFs with layout bugs, or paying a vendor that already scraped them and marked up the price. An MCP endpoint run by the source institution skips both steps. Whether it replaces the vendor tier or just supplements it depends on whether the 2027 target for 80% coverage holds.
