Legal AI vendors are fighting over which tool lawyers keep open all day, since usage-based pricing turns retention into revenue.
Why now: The exchange is dated September 18, a month after Thomson Reuters released Thomson 1.0.
Thomson Reuters answered rival legal AI entrant Astra with a single sentence defending CoCounsel. Legal AI's real fight is over which product lawyers keep open all day. Usage-based token pricing turns every query into revenue for whoever holds that seat, per Artificial Lawyer's analysis.
Harvey, Legora, Thomson Reuters, LexisNexis, Google's Gemini Enterprise for Legal, and Claude for Legal are all named as competing for that seat.
Thomson Reuters released its own model, Thomson 1.0, last month. Its reply to Astra was one line: CoCounsel "remains the trusted professional AI system designed to help complete that work." No feature comparison, no roadmap, only a claim to incumbency. Whether that bet holds depends on how hard lawyers find it to switch tools once they're trained on one.
The piece raises acquisition or a partnership with OpenAI as the likely exit for vendors that can't win centrality on their own. It doesn't name which vendors, or whether any talks exist.
