Perplexity cuts off Sonar API access on September 27, one day after Vercel replaced the SDK fields agents use to call it.
Why now: The one-day gap between this release and the cutoff leaves almost no buffer for the remap it requires.
Vercel released @ai-sdk/perplexity 5.0.0 on September 26, replacing Sonar's model IDs and provider options with Agent API presets. The update also changes stream events and usage metadata, and it drops Sonar PDF input along with image and video results.
The timing is tight. Perplexity stops supporting the Sonar API on September 27, one day after this release. Any agent still calling Sonar through the AI SDK needs the upgrade and a field remap before that cutoff.
The remap isn't cosmetic. Provider options that used to point at a Sonar model ID now point at an Agent API preset. The stream event shapes the SDK returns have changed too, and usage metadata moved with them.
Two projects that build on the AI SDK, Dify and Bifrost, still have open migration issues for this change. Neither has closed out the update yet, even with a hard cutoff a day away.
Teams that pinned an older AI SDK version and skipped Perplexity's changelog won't get a warning. Sonar calls will just start failing after September 27.
