Anthropic Keeps Fable 5, Guts Pro Access

Anthropic reversed a plan to pull Fable 5 from subscriptions entirely, per a July 18 post titled 'Redeploying Fable 5.' Max and Team Premium keep the model on a flat subscription price. Even those tiers get half the usual weekly limits.

Pro and Team Standard lose subscription access altogether. They get a one-time $100 usage credit, then it's API billing: $10 per million input tokens, $50 per million output tokens.

The standard limits Fable 5 runs on are shrinking regardless. A Claude Code promotion expires July 20, the same day Pro's subscription access ends.

The timing traces back to competition: GPT-5.6 Sol reached general availability July 9 at $5 per million input tokens and $30 per million output. That's half Anthropic's input price and 60% of its output price. Pulling Fable 5 from every subscription right after that would have read as Anthropic conceding on price.

Rationing usage instead of cutting price is the choice Anthropic made. Usage caps sort customers by what they'll pay rather than matching a competitor's list price, and Pro is the tier absorbing it, not Max. Watch whether the next Anthropic pricing update touches Max's limits too, not just Pro's exit ramp.

Anthropic's post doesn't say whether the 50% cut is permanent or a stopgap until compute costs come down. If Pro access to Fable 5 matters to you, July 20 is the date to plan around.
