Salesforce spent a record $27 billion on buybacks the same quarter its CEO said AI can't replace CRM, pointing to its Claude integration as proof.
Why now: Benioff made the comments to CNBC on August 26, corroborated by Motley Fool and Fortune coverage from the same week.
AI isn't eroding SaaS, Benioff told CNBC on August 26. Salesforce stock jumped more than 12% on the quarter's results and guidance, backed by a record $27 billion in buybacks in a single quarter.
Frontier models depend on CRM systems rather than replace them, he argued, citing Claudeforce, the company's integration with Anthropic's models, per CNBC's interview with Benioff. At its late-June low, Salesforce was down more than 40% for the year, trading at a P/E of 11 versus roughly 20 in January.
The combination is strange if the 'nonsense' claim is taken at face value. A company convinced AI can't touch its core product doesn't usually need a record buyback to defend its stock price. The buyback reads as confidence the market undervalued a business AI can't touch, or as a hedge against the doubt Benioff won't say out loud.
The real test is next quarter's seat count and net revenue retention, not Benioff's quote. If enterprises replace CRM seats with agent workflows that query customer data directly, skipping the Salesforce screens, the June multiple compression wasn't a mispricing. It was the market getting there early.
