Codex terminal adds live voice conversations

Codex can hold a live voice conversation inside its terminal interface, per Codex's pull request, merged September 7, 2026.

The design puts a filter between what Codex decides and what a listener hears. It voices only the final answer from a voice handoff, keeping the reasoning and typed answers behind it silent. A developer working hands-free gets the conclusion, not the scratch work that produced it.

The feature adds /voice, /voice mute, and /voice stop commands. Each opens a local WebRTC audio connection through app-server signaling. The terminal displays live transcripts next to microphone and speaker level meters, with captions that persist across thread switches. It's gated behind a flag, not on by default.

If a session trips a misalignment policy violation, Codex stops the voice connection and blocks any further handoffs from that session.

Realtime event payloads and spoken text are stripped from receipt and debug logs. That keeps a voice session's audio content out of Codex's logging.
