Any operator clearing 20 million dollars in revenue over any rolling 12 months must sign a separate deal with Moonshot.
Why now: Moonshot published the weights and model card on July 27, and secondary coverage is already misreporting the license terms.
Moonshot released Kimi K3's weights on Hugging Face on July 27, a 1.56TB repository holding a 2.8 trillion parameter mixture-of-experts model with 104 billion active parameters. The license is the change: any operator clearing $20 million in revenue over any rolling 12 months must sign a separate agreement with Moonshot. K2 never carried that term.
The architecture: 896 experts, 16 selected plus 2 shared per token, across 93 layers split between 69 Kimi Delta Attention and 24 Gated MLA. It runs a 1,048,576-token context window and a MoonViT-V2 vision encoder. Moonshot trained it with quantization-aware training and shipped it as MXFP4 weights with MXFP8 activations, per the model card.
Moonshot calls this open weight, not open source. K2 shipped under a modified MIT label; K3 drops that framing, and also drops K2's requirement that consumer products credit Kimi in their branding. Per Simon Willison's write-up, several secondary reports already got the license wrong, claiming Apache 2.0 terms the model card contradicts.
Small teams, researchers, and hobbyists get an unencumbered model. Anyone who builds a real business on it owes Moonshot a conversation, narrower than a permissive license and more enforceable than an attribution clause. Watch whether other labs releasing frontier-scale weights start writing revenue thresholds into their own terms instead of relying on credit requirements.

The file is 1.56TB. That's the first thing you notice about the moonshotai/Kimi-K3 Hugging Face repo that went live today. 2.8 trillion total parameters, 104B activated, 896 routed experts with 16 selected plus 2 shared per token, 93 layers split 69 Kimi Delta Attention and 24...
Simon Willison found 563 Rust filenames in the binary, tracing the swap to a June 17 update.
It holds 262K tokens of context and reportedly beats Alibaba's larger Qwen3.7-Plus on coding and office work.
CCP announced the migration covering code that has run on Stackless 2.7 since 2010. The approach is to run futurize across the codebase and then manually review roughly 20,000 places where Python 2 and 3 behavior diverges, including integer division (Simon Willison). No comple...
The Pragmatic Engineer published a deep read on August 25 of Inspect, the coding agent Ramp built instead of standardizing on Claude Code or Cursor. The numbers: Inspect authors 75% of Ramp's merged PRs, 90% of PRs in its own repository, passed 1 million total sessions in July...
Simon Willison pulled the numbers out of an FT report sourced to "people with knowledge of the matter": Anthropic's annualized revenue reached $65bn in July, up from $47bn in May. Six thousand customers spend $100,000 or more a year. The company told investors it expects a pro...
