The upstream cause is Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron redirecting wafer capacity to high-bandwidth memory for AI accelerators, which consumes roughly three to four times the wafer area per usable bit compared with ordinary DRAM. This is the clearest consumer-visible price signal yet that AI buildout is crowding out commodity hardware.
