The deal, done around July 6, lets SAP query enterprise data where it sits instead of moving it into a warehouse first.
Why now: The deal closed roughly a week before this write-up, per Futurum's July coverage.
SAP finished acquiring Dremio around July 6, according to Futurum. Dremio is a data-lakehouse and federated-query company, the kind of infrastructure that lets you run queries across scattered data sources without copying everything into one warehouse first. SAP is folding it in to give its AI agents a way to reach governed enterprise data directly.
The stakes are boring but real: whoever controls the query layer controls what an agent is allowed to see and touch. Enterprises will not hand an agent free rein over customer records or financial data. They will hand it a governed, federated view where every query respects existing access controls. That's what Dremio is built for, and it's why SAP wanted it instead of building the same capability from scratch.
Futurum frames this as part of a broader move: big incumbents buying query and lakehouse companies to make their existing data "agent-ready," rather than betting on orchestration frameworks or building new agent platforms in-house. SAP already has the applications and the data. What it didn't have was a clean way to expose that data to agents without a migration project attached.
I've built RAG pipelines where the hard part was never the model, it was getting clean, permissioned data into a shape the model could query. That's a small version of the same problem SAP just paid to solve at enterprise scale.
Watch whether Oracle, Microsoft, or Salesforce make a similar lakehouse or query-layer purchase in the next few months. If governed data access keeps getting bought instead of built, the agent story stops being about which model reasons best and starts being about who owns the pipes.
