Microsoft cuts security engineering jobs to fund agent monitoring

Microsoft reportedly cut hundreds of security engineering jobs on July 18, per WinBuzzer. It moved the freed budget toward Security Copilot, code-vulnerability scanners, and tools built to monitor enterprise software agents.

The first two, Security Copilot and the vulnerability scanners, are defensive products Microsoft already sells. The third is different. It's a bet that watching what agents do with their permissions becomes its own budget category, not a feature bolted on elsewhere.

Nobody clearly owns that job inside most enterprises, the way vulnerability management or access control already do. Microsoft just priced the gap above traditional security headcount. Enterprise security buyers have that gap to explain in their next budget review.

WinBuzzer's report doesn't say how many roles were cut, or what share of the freed budget goes to agent monitoring versus the other two priorities. Watch for whether Microsoft names a standalone agent-governance product or folds the work entirely into Security Copilot's existing scope.
