Why now: The bill-shock pattern is showing up as AI workloads outrun the per-host, per-span pricing built for traditional services, per sentrial.com's July 21 report.
Datadog charges $500 a year for Bits AI SRE, its autonomous investigation agent covering 20 investigations a month, about $2 each, per sentrial.com. Teams adding LLM monitoring elsewhere in the stack report bill increases of 40 to 200 percent. The driver, per the same report: AI workloads generate 10 to 50 times the telemetry of a traditional service.
The rest of the observability stack still prices the old way. APM runs $31 per host per month. LLM Observability is metered per ingested span and per indexed log.
The incentives run backward. The same agents producing that telemetry flood are also the product sold to make sense of it. Bits AI SRE is the exception. It's priced per investigation, an outcome, not an input, so cutting the noise doesn't cut Datadog's revenue on that line item.
If outcome-based pricing stays confined to one product while ingestion keeps charging per span and per log, the bill-shock problem doesn't disappear. It just moves elsewhere in the stack. Anyone standing up LLM Observability should ask what their vendor bills by: host, span, or log. That answer matters before a new AI workload's telemetry volume lands on an invoice nobody budgeted for.
