open-design has hit 80.3K stars on GitHub as an alternative to hosted AI design tools. It's Apache-2.0, with no paid tier and no usage limits, so the only recurring cost is what you already pay your model provider. That undercuts the subscription math hosted alternatives are built around.
It's a local-first desktop app for macOS, Windows, and Linux. It turns a coding agent you already run into a design engine, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Copilot, or 21 others. Feed it a prompt and it outputs prototypes, landing pages, dashboards, slides, images, and video.
I spent two decades as a visual designer before I went full-stack, so I'm skeptical of 'AI does design' tools by default. Most are demos: a nice preview pane and nothing you can actually ship. Real export, HTML, PDF, PPTX, MP4, is what separates this from that pile.
open-design runs on 25 distinct local executables. That list includes less mainstream names like Qwen, Kimi, Hermes, and Antigravity alongside Claude Code and Copilot. Betting on 25 backends instead of one model vendor is the whole point.
What the project page doesn't say is how output quality holds up across those 25 backends. Whether a Kimi-driven prototype looks anything like a Claude Code one is the open question before anyone standardizes a workflow here.
