Cherry Studio, whose desktop client serves 300-plus assistants, added a skills registry the same week, per its repo.
Why now: Vercel's changelog post and Cherry Studio's registry addition both landed the week of July 23, 2026.
Vercel now packages tools, connections, skills, instructions, and hooks into one installable unit for eve agents. Developers publish, install, and version that bundle like any other dependency, per Vercel's changelog.
That's the versioning and reuse story ad-hoc skill directories have been missing. It lands the same week Cherry Studio, a desktop client with roughly 48,900 GitHub stars, added its own skills registry, per its GitHub repo.
The skills primitive started in Claude Code and moved fast enough that two unrelated products are now building competing distribution systems around it. Neither source says the two formats are compatible, and neither mentions a shared spec in the works.
Both are solving the same underlying problem. A skill used to live as a folder you copied by hand. Now it needs somewhere to be listed, versioned, and pulled down for reuse, whether that's Vercel's registry or Cherry Studio's.
A compatibility layer or shared spec could head off the fragmentation, but neither source says whether Vercel or Cherry Studio is building toward one.

Multiple trending repos now organize functionality as discrete, declarative skills instead of monolithic prompts. Cherry Studio exposes agent-skills and an awesome-skills catalog, html-anything ships 75 skills, and Claude Code v2.1.178 added collision-handled loading of skills...
Six clients. One manifest. Zero vendor lock. Vercel published Agent Plugins 1.0.0 on August 6, an openly licensed spec that bundles Agent Skills and MCP servers behind a single portable manifest. The shape is deliberately boring: a plugin.json requiring only schemaVersion and...
A spec is a press release until someone who didn't write it implements it. GitHub made Agent Plugins 1.0 generally available on August 12 across VS Code, Copilot CLI, the Copilot SDK, and the Copilot app on all plans. The spec, published August 6, was co-authored by AWS, Anysp...
Three things happened this month that only make sense together. Agent Plugins 1.0 shipped co-signed by six competitors: AWS, Anysphere, Microsoft, OpenAI, Vercel and Google (GitHub Changelog). It makes skills-plus-MCP bundles portable across clients. OpenAI's August 11 Codex c...
CherryHQ/cherry-studio (50,068 stars) cut v2.0.0 on August 5 and reached 2.0.2 by August 7, rebuilding from chat client into a work surface with multi-window and split-view layouts. The release notes say the subscription part explicitly: OpenAI and Anthropic endpoints, reusing...
VoltAgent/awesome-design-md is a collection of 69 DESIGN.md files. That's it. Each file encodes a popular brand's design system, think Claude, Vercel, Cursor, Stripe, in plain markdown. Color palettes, typography hierarchies, component styles, spacing scales, responsive breakp...
