Higher levels sharpen answers on hard tasks but burn more credits, the same tradeoff Claude Code already offers through its effort setting.

GitHub's Copilot cloud agent picked up a reasoning level selector on August 3, setting depth apart from the model choice, per the changelog. That's a new lever for spending compute on one task, and it matters for anyone running the cloud agent daily. Instead of switching models for something hard, an engineer now turns reasoning level up or down while keeping the same model.
The tradeoff is stated plainly: raise the level and answers on complex problems improve, and credit use goes up. No softer framing offered.
Claude Code already has this control, exposed through its effort setting. The two biggest coding agent platforms now share the same design: reasoning depth is a per-task dial, not a model swap.
What the changelog leaves out matters here: whether a higher level changes what the agent's allowed to do, or only how well it reasons. A separate test at maximum reasoning effort found zero unauthorized tool calls, evidence that depth and permission are separate concerns.
