Why now: DSH Desktop's jump from 0.1.0 to 2.0.0 landed within two days of its August 13 creation, and its issue backlog hasn't caught up.
DSH Desktop jumped from version 0.1.0 to 2.0.0 in two days, then gained 7,961 GitHub stars in three days, per the project's repository. That puts an unofficial installer in front of anyone who'd rather click a DMG than set up DeepSeek's harness by hand. 114 open issues against 330 forks is the number worth watching, not the star count.
The repository, anywhere-labs/deepseek-harness-desktop, wraps the official DeepSeek harness in an Electron app. That means skipping a Node.js install and the local Web UI's manual launch. It's MIT licensed and was created August 13.
DSH Desktop ships macOS Apple Silicon DMG and Windows x64 installers through its own domain, built for download reliability inside mainland China. The project states plainly it is community-maintained, not a DeepSeek product.
The growth curve says people want this badly enough to skip an official build. But 2.0.0 arriving two days after 0.1.0 usually means changes shipped faster than anyone tested them. That pace, not the star count, is why 114 open issues against 330 forks matters more here.
Installing DSH Desktop as of August 16 means trusting an unvetted third-party binary instead of DeepSeek's own web interface. The repository doesn't say how many of the 114 open issues are installer failures versus feature requests. Whether the friction is cosmetic or structural stays unclear.
