A quarter of the platform's agent traffic comes from harnesses Hugging Face hasn't identified, according to its August 14 census of the open model ecosystem.
Why now: Hugging Face published the census on August 14, covering January through August 2026, three days before this briefing.
Hugging Face started tracking agent-tagged traffic this year, and Claude Code took 44.4% of it in July, per the platform's August 14 summer census. Almost 24% of that traffic came from harnesses nobody has catalogued. Hugging Face can't say what a quarter of the agents hitting its infrastructure actually are.
The rest of the census tracks scale, not identity. Model repos grew from 2.43 million to 2.96 million between January and August, and datasets grew from 711,000 to more than 1 million. Most of that growth goes unused: 85.6% of models have fewer than 200 lifetime downloads, per the report.
Chinese labs are also outpacing US labs on size. Monthly parameter ceilings from Chinese labs ranged from 754 billion to 2.78 trillion, against sub-130 billion ceilings from US labs. And 59% of Chinese releases above 20 billion parameters use the Apache 2.0 license. That's a permissive choice, and it cuts against the idea that scale and openness trade off.
Claude Code's 44.4% share looks like dominance, but the tag is self-reported, so the number undercounts agents that skip it. The real number to watch is the 24% unregistered share. If it grows faster than Claude Code's tracked share next quarter, that's the sign that agent traffic is going dark, not consolidating around one harness.
