Vectoral pegs the float in the tens of millions, trading through Telegram and Reddit groups with no resale channel sanctioned by either AI provider.
Why now: Lenhard's report has reached 301 points on Hacker News, per Vectoral.
Brokers advertise reselling soon-to-expire AI API credits at 30 to 80 percent off list price, some claiming $100,000 in daily volume, per Vectoral's Matt Lenhard.
Unused credits work like a currency with no oversight from the companies that issued them. Lenhard estimates tens of millions of dollars circulating this way, outside any process OpenAI or Anthropic sanctioned.
One marketplace listing alone carries $200,000 in OpenAI credits and $10,000 in Anthropic credits. Storefronts like AI Credits and AICreditMart sell credits directly. Routers such as CheapCredits, Tokvana and Neokens shop a buyer's order across providers for the cheapest fill, and CheapCredits advertises a flat 40 percent off every model it carries.
None of this runs through a sanctioned channel. Deals get posted to Telegram groups, r/saasforsale and r/indiehackers, the same places startups already trade SaaS assets.
Lenhard calls a crackdown likely, not hypothetical, because a market this liquid built on unofficial credit transfers is the kind of thing that draws enforcement. Anyone pricing a product around discounted credits is renting supply that depends on the providers looking away, not a right anyone granted them.
