The Rust terminal agent beat two other trending repos the same week OpenAI called Codex a platform, not a chat interface.
Why now: This comes from the August 23 GitHub Trending snapshot, the same week OpenAI made its platform pitch for Codex.
Codex picked up 1,544 stars in a single day, climbing to 114,696 total. It topped GitHub's daily trending chart, posted August 23, with 17,497 forks.
That's more than basecamp/omarchy added (803 stars) or Alishahryar1/free-claude-code (1,040), the next two entries on the same list. For a project already past 100,000 stars, another 1,544 in a day says developers are weighing terminal agents, not treating the category as settled.
The timing lines up with OpenAI's own pitch for Codex. The company has argued the reusable asset is the harness, not the chat surface.
A daily star spike doesn't prove that argument on its own. Stars measure attention, not retention. GitHub's trending page doesn't say why the jump happened, whether from a release or a mention elsewhere.
What it does show is that Codex isn't losing the attention fight to whichever agent people assume has already won. Whether that shows up in what people build on Codex, not just in how many people star it, is the next thing worth watching.
