Ornith-1.5-35B-A3B hit rank 10 on Hugging Face's trending board five days after its August 18 upload, with 23,516 downloads and 339 likes as of August 23. A GGUF version of the same model has separately pulled 369,000 downloads, per the model's Hugging Face listing.
The interesting part isn't the download count. It's the shape of the model and the company it's keeping. Ornith-1.5 is a mixture-of-experts setup, 35 billion parameters total with only 3 billion active per token, built to run on consumer hardware rather than a data center rack. That's a real design choice: you get a chunk of a much bigger model's capacity without paying its inference cost.
What stands out more is what's around it. Six of the fifteen slots near Ornith on the trending board are uncensored or abliterated derivatives of Qwen3.8-27B, per the current listing. Ornith is the only non-Qwen3.8, non-MiniMax text-generation model in that top 15. When a trending list is that homogeneous, it's not really ranking innovation anymore. It's ranking who can fine-tune the same base checkpoint fastest and strip its guardrails hardest.
That matters for anyone picking an open-weights model off a trending board and assuming it reflects the field. Right now it mostly reflects one popular base model getting repackaged over and over. Ornith breaking into that list with a genuinely different architecture is the signal, not the download number by itself.
