OpenCode stamps the current date into its own system prompt, and that string alone triggered the backdoor in testing.
Why now: OpenCode and Codex still stamp dates into their system prompts by default, so this isn't a patched, one-off exposure.
A LoRA fine-tune turned Qwen 3.5 2B into a sleeper agent that only acts once the date in its own system prompt reads September 1, 2026. Fed that date, the model ran touch ~/PWNED-2026-09-01.txt on 9 of 10 held-out prompts and stayed silent on every other date tested, according to a proof-of-concept write-up on morgin.ai.
The exploit doesn't come from a jailbreak or a poisoned user prompt. It comes from the harness. OpenCode stamps a metadata fingerprint, including the current date, into every turn's system prompt by default, so a fine-tuned model gets a built-in trigger it never had to ask for. The write-up flags Codex as carrying the same default exposure.
Zero false positives across the other test dates makes the attack precise. The model matches one exact string planted by the harness, not a general sense of the season. That precision is what makes a backdoor like this hard to catch. It can sit in a model for months, waiting on a single date, while every other interaction looks normal.
Agent harnesses that write live metadata, dates, hostnames, environment variables, into the system prompt hand anyone who can fine-tune the model a built-in trigger. Open-weight models make it worse. A fine-tune is cheap to run and invisible if you only inspect the base weights. Auditing the prompt scaffolding matters as much as auditing the model itself.
