The tool treats your memory file as trained weights and your session logs as the feedback nobody was using.
Why now: The project passed 190 stars on GitHub after publishing August 21.
backpass scans the local transcript stores from seven agent coding harnesses, looking for sessions that ran inside your repo. From those transcripts it proposes edits to your AGENTS.md file, the document most coding agents read at the start of every session for conventions and instructions. That file drives every session an agent runs against your code, but nothing read the transcripts back to check whether the instructions worked.
The pitch, per backpass's GitHub repo, reframes the setup in machine learning terms. AGENTS.md is the weights. Each agent session is a forward pass. The transcript sitting on disk afterward is the loss signal nobody reads.
Proposed edits come with a token budget and a human gate. A person has to look at each proposed change and accept or reject it; that review is the only thing standing between a bad edit and AGENTS.md.
It's macOS and Linux only, published to npm. No Windows support yet, and the GitHub page doesn't say whether that's a near-term roadmap item or a bigger constraint on how it reads transcript stores.
