Benchmark's Rory O'Driscoll caps legal AI at 5-10% of legal spend, two days after Harvey's $550M round valued it at $15.5B on $400M ARR.
Why now: Harvey announced the raise September 9, and O'Driscoll made the counter-case two days later on the September 11 20VC x SaaStr episode.
Harvey closed a $550 million round at a $15.5 billion valuation on September 9, co-led by Lightspeed and Diffusion. The legal AI company says it's past $400 million in annual recurring revenue. It counts more than 3,000 customers, including 80% of the AmLaw 100 and half the Fortune 10, per Harvey's announcement. Total funding stands past $1.5 billion.
Two days later, Benchmark's Rory O'Driscoll made the case that the valuation might be pricing a market that doesn't exist at that size. On the September 11 20VC x SaaStr episode, O'Driscoll argued legal AI has a hard ceiling. A $10,000-12,000 per-lawyer subscription is 5-10% of a $200,000 salary. Coding tools capture 30-50% of a developer's budget because they replace hours of work directly. Legal work doesn't compress the same way, so O'Driscoll puts the addressable market at $30-60 billion of a $300 billion legal services industry.
The two numbers don't square. A $15.5 billion valuation assumes room to grow well past a $30-60 billion ceiling.

The loudest enterprise-agent number of the quarter falls apart when you divide it. SaaStr's breakdown of Salesforce Q2 FY27 (reported August 26, stock up 23%) puts cRPO at $33.5B growing 14% against 11% revenue growth. Agentforce ARR passed $1.5B at +240% on 3.2 billion agenti...
IGV is down 24% in Q1. That's the worst quarter for software since 2008. But here's the number that stopped me cold: for the first time in modern history, software valuations have fallen below the S&P 500 multiple. SaaStr put the market cap destruction at roughly $2 trillion s...
Co-led by Lightspeed and Diffusion with Sapphire and Whale Rock joining, up from $11B in March, on ARR past $350-400M with 80% of Am Law 100 firms as customers. Capital is earmarked for proprietary models rather than wrapping frontier ones. Bloomberg A vertical app company buy...
$688 billion in hyperscaler AI capex against $110 billion of revenue. No capex breakeven until 2031 or 2032. Those are Scale Venture Partners' Rory O'Driscoll's numbers from SaaStr AI 2026, and they're the backdrop for the most useful strategy conversation I've read this month...
SaaStr's customer success panel put numbers on something I'd been noticing anecdotally: the CSM role grew 700% through Q2 2022, then flatlined for four years, while forward-deployed engineering is up 1,000%+ and still climbing. What makes it a story rather than a stat is the s...
In the same 30-day window: Salesforce launched Agentforce per-action pricing at $0.10/action ($800M ARR, 22K deals); Workday cratered 10% despite beating earnings on "seat compression" fears; Intercom Fin went standalone at $0.99 per resolution; Anthropic's Cowork legal plugin...
