Rune keeps its coding agent in a separate extension, not the core of this GPU-rendered, keyboard-driven Go IDE, per the project's GitHub repo. An agent embedded in the core can corrupt manual editing if a bad update reaches everyone at once. Isolating it in cmd/rune-agent means Rune can rip it out without touching the base editor. The project reached 302 stars two days after its blog announced it had gone open source on September 10.

The editor itself is licensed under GPLv3, which requires derivative works to release their source. The extension API it depends on, rune-go-sdk, is a separate module under Apache-2.0, a permissive license with no such requirement. That split lets developers build closed-source extensions on top of a copyleft editor.

The Rune blog also names two other keyboard-first editors it saw appear within a day of its own release. One is Toast, an in-terminal Go IDE at 197 stars. The other is a project called Txt.
