Anthropic merged Cowork and Artifacts into the main Claude window on September 16, 2026, according to Anthropic's announcement. A model vendor that edits slide decks and comments on documents now competes directly with Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 and the presentation layer of Figma.
The single window decides on its own whether a message needs a quick inline answer or a longer agentic task. Users no longer pick a mode first.
Three beta editors now live inside that same conversation: Claude Docs, Claude Slides and Claude Design. Slides export to PowerPoint and PDF. Docs supports collaborative editing and commenting through a share link. Design runs on Canva's engine, which Anthropic has used since April, but now opens inside any chat instead of as a separate tool.
The rollout starts with Pro and Max subscribers on web, desktop and mobile. Team and Free plans come later. Enterprise admins get at least 30 days of notice before the change reaches their org. Anthropic's announcement doesn't say what else changes for admins beyond that notice period.
Every message now runs through a triage step that guesses whether the user wanted a fast reply or a background agent run. If that guess is wrong often enough, users go back to picking a mode by hand, and the reason to merge the interfaces disappears.
