TD Cowen called the launch a likely driver of a 5% two-day slide in the software index, per Business Insider.
Why now: Business Insider's two-session tracking of the Presence selloff, corroborated by MarketWatch, Morningstar and a TD Cowen note, is what put the cross-category drop in front of investors.
OpenAI's Presence launch dropped five software stocks across five unrelated categories in two trading sessions, per Business Insider.
That's collaboration, marketing, HR, CRM and identity software, five different buyers with five different budgets, all moved by one release.
Business Insider tracked Atlassian down 11.8%, HubSpot down 12.7%, Workday down 9.9%, Salesforce down 7.7% and Okta down 4.2% in the two sessions after the announcement.
TD Cowen's Derrick Wood called Presence a likely "major reason" for a 3% drop in the IGV software index on Wednesday, with more losses Thursday. Over the two sessions, IGV fell roughly 5%. It's down more than 21% year to date.
Wood's note described what Presence actually bundles: model reasoning, data access, and governance and policy control. That's the same stack SaaS vendors have sold for years as their moat, now packaged into what reads like one product page.
Presence never had to out-feature Atlassian, HubSpot, Workday, Salesforce or Okta to hurt all five at once. That's what it looks like when the market starts pricing proximity to the model instead of expertise within a category. Watch whether the next OpenAI release does this again to a different five companies. If it does, software stops being priced by category.
