The July 29 release also adds session pinning, thread forking, and a warning instead of silently truncating skill catalogs.
Why now: Codex's rust-v0.146.0 release, which added the Claude Code marketplace, shipped July 29.
Codex 0.146.0 added plugin marketplaces for Amazon Bedrock and Claude Code on July 29, per the release notes on GitHub. OpenAI's coding agent can now pull in plugins built for a competitor's ecosystem.
The rest of the release changes how Codex runs day to day. Sessions can be named and pinned through /new and /clear instead of piling up as unlabeled threads. Thread forking adds paginated history, including temporary forks you can throw away without cluttering the main conversation. The app-server can connect to remote Code Mode hosts over WebSocket, and executors handle their own skill discovery rather than relying on Codex's built-in list.
One fix matters more than it looks. Skill catalogs warn when they have to get truncated under a tight context budget, instead of quietly dropping entries. A skill disappearing from context with no warning looks exactly like the model forgetting how to do something, and that's the kind of bug that sends you debugging the wrong layer for hours.
Adding a marketplace that reads Claude Code plugins is a bet that developers who already built tools for Anthropic's agent won't rebuild them for Codex from scratch. If that's the read, Codex just made it cheaper to keep one foot in each ecosystem, which mostly benefits whichever agent developers were already committed to. Watch whether Anthropic ships a matching importer for Codex plugins. If it stays one-directional, this is OpenAI conceding ground, not the two building a shared standard.
