Forty-nine percent of enterprises pulled back AI agent deployments because operating costs outran the value delivered, per KPMG's Global AI Pulse survey of 2,145 senior leaders across 20 countries. Forty-two percent said they still can't see where agent token spend goes until the invoice lands.
The mechanism: usage-based token pricing colliding with agents whose multi-step tasks meter unpredictably. Forbes reported it first on August 9, corroborated by CFO Dive.
A thread on r/LocalLLaMA called it the bubble bursting, but the survey doesn't support that. Seventy-nine percent of the same leaders still rank AI a top investment priority, and spend is holding steady. This is a visibility failure, not a capability one.
Product Hunt's August 10 leaderboard shows where the gap is getting filled. Six of the top nine listings are agent tools, and three sell directly into agent operating cost: Paritok, oqoqo, and Prime Agent.
Paritok, at #3 with 147 upvotes, is a compression gateway claiming a 25% token reduction on the first turn, climbing past 85% in long sessions. It strips full JSON tool schemas an agent won't use, trims whole files to the one function called, and drops stale debug output. It runs an open-source 4B model trained on 45,000 real agent trajectories as a drop-in proxy for Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and OpenHands.
On GitHub, the agent-fleet control plane paperclip has crossed 76,172 stars, and its newest features are budget controls, agent approvals, and an MCP tool gateway. Token cost has become a fleet-level problem now, not a per-session one.
I've hit a smaller version of this myself: an unattended agent loops on a failing test and I don't find out for three hours. The fix isn't a better model. It's a dollar ceiling enforced at the proxy, not the prompt.
The agent tools that win the next few months will meter cost, not just add capability. KPMG's own numbers back that up more than they back up a bubble.
