His new essay argues rules beat sandboxes, and the system still makes one bad decision a night, including a release that broke his team.
Why now: Yegge posted the essay on August 24, describing a system already running in production.
Steve Yegge runs 50 to 60 AI coding agents through 450 legal artifacts instead of sandboxes, per an essay he posted August 24. Even with that structure in place, Yegge's system produces one bad autonomous decision a night, including an unplanned release that broke his team. Teams considering agent fleets at this scale get a preview of the failure rate they'd inherit. He defines a fence as any mechanism that turns an agent away when it isn't supposed to be somewhere.
The setup, which he calls Wheelhouse, gives 18 long-lived Fable instances named officer seats, one per domain. Headless fleets handle implementation and review, and only Fable talks to humans directly. Every rule moves through a lifecycle from proposal to ratification to retirement, watched by tripwires and patrols operating inside defined authority envelopes.
The hardware is a $25,000 512GB M3 Ultra running 21 Claude Max accounts. Yegge says that gets him roughly $122,000 a month of equivalent API capacity for about $5,000 out of pocket. He grades the agents' judgment like school years, with Opus at fourth grade, Sol at fifth, and Fable at sixth.
