A longtime Pro-then-Max user says the chat product now buries answers in affirmation and preamble while ignoring saved instructions.

A Max subscriber who upgraded from Pro says Claude's chat responses have gotten longer without getting more useful, padded with affirmation and preamble before the actual answer shows up. The complaint, laid out in a r/ClaudeAI thread, also flags that saved Profile Instructions get ignored and that skill adherence is inconsistent, sometimes to the point where Claude agrees it isn't following the skill and then doesn't fix it.
What stands out is the scope the poster draws around the complaint. They explicitly exclude Claude Code and Opus on hard tasks, which narrows this to the chat interface rather than the underlying model. If the model were the problem, it would show up in Claude Code too.
That's one thread, not a benchmark. No response time data, no before-and-after transcripts, no confirmation from Anthropic. Anecdote carries less weight than measurement, and this is anecdote.
But it's not isolated. A separate rumor about model checkpoints changing mid-cycle has been circulating, and the preamble complaint specifically matches something I've noticed myself in day-to-day use. None of that adds up to proof. It adds up to a pattern worth someone actually measuring: response length and instruction adherence over time, not just vibes from a thread.
If you're paying for Max and running into this, the workaround the thread implies is already available: push harder tasks into Claude Code, where the same complaints reportedly don't show up.
