The installers repackage OpenAI's official macOS app, so updates depend on one outside maintainer, not OpenAI.
Why now: The project's star count is the only fresh number here, and it reached 3,330 as of Aug. 4.
The unofficial codex-desktop-linux project has picked up 3,330 GitHub stars for repackaging OpenAI's macOS Codex app into Linux installers, per its GitHub page.
That's a real signal for OpenAI. Linux developers are apparently a big enough slice of its coding-agent audience to build and maintain the installer OpenAI never shipped itself.
The repo bundles OpenAI's Chat, Work and Codex desktop surfaces into native packages. It ships a .deb for Debian and Ubuntu, a Fedora build, and other distributions besides. It's built from the official macOS bundle, not written from scratch.
The usual risks of any unofficial port apply here too. Provenance and update lag sit with the maintainer, not OpenAI. How current the Linux build stays depends on one outside developer keeping pace, not on OpenAI's release schedule.
Watch whether OpenAI ships an official Linux build in the months ahead. If it doesn't, expect more forks filling the same gap.
