Fetching from the wire…
Public story · 2026-08-17 · high
The August 22-26 games make the 100-meter race fully autonomous, forcing scenario events like firefighting and retail work away from remote control.
Why now: The Beijing games open Saturday, August 22, less than a week after the field size was confirmed on August 17.
Beijing hosts the second World Humanoid Robot Games starting August 22, per r/singularity. The five-day event at the National Speed Skating Oval runs through August 26. It draws 2,056 robots from 666 teams, roughly double last year's robot count and a 138% jump in teams entered. Teams come from 16 countries.
That field size matters for anyone tracking embodied AI. A contest this size, with autonomy replacing remote control across the scenario events, is the closest public benchmark embodied AI has for physical tasks.
Thirty-two events split into two tracks. One is competitive: track and field, soccer, street dance. The other is scenario-based: housekeeping, firefighting, retail assistance.
The rule change that matters is buried in the format. The 100-meter race is now fully autonomous. Scenario events push teams toward autonomous positioning, recognition, and manipulation instead of the teleoperation many competitors used last year.
That distinction is the real story. If autonomous entries take most of the medals, it shows humanoid robots can handle basic physical tasks without a human steering them. If teleoperated teams still win, the industry's autonomy claims are ahead of the hardware. The games run August 22 through 26 at the National Speed Skating Oval, and the results will show which is true.
